I was initially trained in youth work with applied theology, completing a JNC validated youth work degree with the University of Chester. I have worked with charities, youth groups, schools, churches, local authorities and universities. Since 2009 I have specialised in relationships and sex education. Completing a Masters in Public Health in 2020, I have a particular interest in theories of behaviour change and youth empowerment. My research dissertation explored the factors that influence an educator’s attitude towards teaching RSE.
My experience spans supervision, consultancy, research, small group facilitation, classroom teaching and academic lecturing. In all contexts I am passionate in creating opportunities for people to learn and grow. I love creating new resources and exploring the overlap between education and games. I have developed hundreds of digital and physical RSE teaching resources in line with the Department for Education’s guidance. One of my original RSE games even made it's way into the Netflix reboot of Heartbreak High.
I have a particular interest in supporting young people with RSE outside of mainstream eductaion due to severe mental ill health and I work with a local CAMHs inpatient unit to ensure young people receive high quality RSE. With a love for travel, my RSE work has led him to work in a variety of countries from Jersey and the Netherlands to Kazakhstan and India. Currently I am researching the impact of AI in how young people experience connection, communication, intimacy and sex.

He demonstrates outstanding subject knowledge and presents content in a way that is clear, engaging, and highly informative. His lessons are interactive and genuinely thought-provoking, encouraging students to reflect, ask questions, and develop a deeper understanding of the topics covered. Gareth has a remarkable ability to tailor every session to the appropriate age and developmental stage, ensuring that all material is delivered sensitively and at exactly the right level for each year group. We have worked with Gareth for a number of years and he has delivered RSE sessions the young people at Ancora House School and training for the education team and the wider multidisciplinary team. Gareth has a wealth of knowledge and has the ability to deliver potentially ‘embarrassing’ topics in a safe, non-judgemental and informative way with some of the most vulnerable learners. Gareth listens to staff and young people to ensure that his sessions are appropriate to the audience. He uses teaching methods that are accessible to all to create a positive learning experience.

"At Youthscape we benefit enormously from Gareth’s expertise and experience — not just in the subjects he addresses, but in the way he instinctively understands how young people actually learn and engage. He’s consistently ahead of the curve, combining sharp critical thinking with a grounded awareness of what’s really happening in youth culture and in the world of sexual health. Gareth has that rare ability to hold complex, sensitive issues with both clarity and compassion, making them accessible and genuinely transformative for young people. What also sets him apart is his understanding of the varied contexts youth practitioners and teachers are navigating. He recognises the role of faith, ethos, and community in how young people make decisions, and he handles those dynamics with care and intelligence — equipping professionals to approach difficult conversations with confidence, wisdom, and integrity."
